A magnificent large multi coloured (red, silver and gold) bronze of seated Nandi from Rajasthan, India, golden carpet with tussles on the back and hump with four garlands of bells and tussles around the neck, heavily decorated snout and head with short horns, L 11.0” X  H 6.5” ca 19th century possibly early 20th century
The cult of Nandi originates from the Indus Valley over 2500 years ago where seals of the sacred bull were found along with prototype Shiva (Pasupathi, Lord of the Beasts) and this worship has continued up to now where the animal is regarded as the mount of Shiva.
