Antenatal Care

Antenatal Care [Latin: ante, before + natalis, pertaining to birth] Eucharius Rosslin of Germany devoted a chapter to diseases in pregnancy in his Rose Garden for Pregnant Women and Midwives, published in 1513. This was translated into English as Byrth of Mankind in 1540. François Mauriceau (1637–1709), the French obstetrician, included several chapters on diseases of pregnancy in Des Maladies des Femmes Grosses et Accouchespublished in 1668. The Hôtel Dieu of Paris, founded in AD 650, was one of the first hospitals to adopt a policy of admitting women who presented themselves after they had reached the 9th month of pregnancy. The Hôpital de la Salpêtrière admitted pregnant women before the last month of pregnancy. A monograph on antenatal care in England, Hints to Mothers for the Management of Health During the Period of Pregnancy and in the Lying Room, with Common Errors in Connection with these Subjects was written by Thomas Bull in 1837. This was so popular that it underwent 25 editions by 1877. Adolphie Pinnard (1844–1934), professor of obstetrics at Paris, wrote on malpresentation in 1878. A shelter for abandoned pregnant women was established in Paris at the initiative of Madame Becquet in 1892. A similar establishment connected to the Royal Maternity Hospital, Dublin opened in 1899. James Haig Ferguson (1862–1934), an obstetrician at this hospital, started the first antenatal clinic in 1915. The father of antenatal care in Britain, John William Ballentyne (1861–1923), published A Plea for a Pro-Maternity Hospital in 1901 and established antenatal care and antenatal diagnosis. Funds for promoting beds for antenatal care were donated by Freeland Barber, a co-author of the Manual of Gynaecology published in 1882. The first bed was named after Hamilton, who founded the Edinburgh Maternity Hospital in 1791. In America antenatal visits were started at the Boston Lying-in Hospital in 1901 and by 1912 it was allocating three antenatal visits per patient. It was one of the first to expand to provide complete antenatal care in America.
