Anthropology

Anthropology [Greek: anthropos, man + logos, a discourse] Study of the human race in relation to its origin, evolution, distribution and culture. Aristotle is supposed to have been the first to use the term. Magnus Hundt’s(1449–1519) Anthropologium de Hominis Diginate (1501) deals with the anatomy and physiology of the human body. It was defined as ‘a treatise on man’ byDiderot and D’Alembert in 1772. The term was used in its present sense by Johan Friedrich Blumenbach (1752–1840), professor of medicine at Göttingen. Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), a German philosopher and professor of logic and metaphysics from Königsberg was suggested an animal origin for man in Anthropology published in 1798. Physical evidence for the antiquity of man was unearthed by Johan Friedrich Esper (1732–1781) at Gailenreuth Cave in 1770. An attempted to trace man’s ancestors was made by Heinrich Phillip August Ernest Haeckel (1834–1919) in his Generelle Morphologiae published in 1866. British surgeon, Edward Tyson (1649–1708) from Bristol published The Anatomy of the Pigmy compared with that of a Monkey, an Ape and a Man in 1698. It became a branch of science in the 18th century due to the work of Thomas Huxley, Charles Darwin (1809–1882),Sir Charles Lyell (1797–1875),Edward Tylor, Arthur Keith(1866–1955), Paul Broca (1824–1880),Rudolph Virchow (1821–1902) and Johann Friedrich Blumenbach(1752–1840). The first Anthropological Society was formed in Paris by Broca in 1859. The Anthropological Society in England was founded in 1863 with John Hunt. Antiquity of Man was published by Lyell in the same year. Pierre Marcellin Boule (1861–1942), professor at the Natural History Museum in Paris who made the first complete construction of Neanderthal skeleton, published Les Hommes Fossiles in 1921.
