Bacteriology

Bacteriology [Greek: bacterion, rod + logos, discourse] The dogma of spontaneous generation existed up to the 16th century until Fracastorus (1478–1553), a physician in Vienna, proposed a possible cause for infectious diseases in Contagium Vivum, published in 1546. The earliest recorded attempt to view microscopic organisms was made by Athanasius Kircher (1601–1680), a Jesuit priest, in 1658. He examined the blood of a victim of plague with his primitive microscope and described what he saw as ëwormsí of plague in Scrutinium physico-medicim contagiosae luis quae pestis dicitur. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632–1723), a Dutch lensmaker, described microscopic forms of ëanimalculesí, mostly protozoan organisms, in 1683. Nicholas Andry (1658–1742) proposed the possibility of infection by germs in 1701. Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) showed the presence of living cells in the fermentation process. Robert Koch (1843–1910), a German bacteriologist, isolated the first bacillus, causing anthrax, in 1876 and described a method of growing it in a culture. Since then, progress was sustained with a rapid succession of discoveries: mycobacterium causing leprosy by Gerhard Hansen (1841–1912) in 1874; gonococcal bacteria by Albert Neisser (1855–1916) in 1879; staphylococcus by Alexander Ogston (1844–1929)in 1881; and tubercle bacilli by Koch in 1882.
