Cancer

Cancer [Latin: cancer, crab] Mentioned in the Ebers papyrus, written around 1500 BC. Greeks used the term ‘gangrene’ and Romans called it ‘lupus’ because it consumed like a wolf. Galen (129–200) thought that the puffed-up veins looked like a crab. Ancient Egyptians treated cancer with excision, cautery and astringents. According to Paul of Aegina(625–690), it is produced by thick overheated bile. He stated that ‘it can occur in any part of the body, but the breasts of women were commonly affected, due to its laxity which admitted humors, that caused it’. Hippocrates (460–377 BC) also described a fatal case of cancer of breast. Aulus Cornelius Celsus (25 BC–50 AD) observed that they became unequal and immovable, which is equivalent to the presently established signs of irregularity and fixation of malignant cancers. Rhazes (841–926) was wary of removing cancers of the breast and described a case which occurred on the other side after the removal of one breast. Antyllus, in AD 300 recommended that advanced cancers should be left as they were inoperable. Alexander Monroe (1697–1767) of Edinburgh discouraged surgery for all forms of cancer. The first American book on tumors was published by an American surgeon, John Collins Warren (1778–1856) in 1837. Edwin Klebs (1834–1913), an American scientist born in Vienna, noted an abnormality of chromosomes in cancer cells in 1889. One of the earliest workers on cancer statistics was an American, Frederick Ludwig Hoffman (b 1865), who wrote The Mortality from Cancer Throughout the World in 1915. He also pointed out the possible harm from asbestos dust. An English pioneers was Sir John Bland-Sutton (1855–1936), who wrote Cancer Clinically Considered(1909) and Tumors, Innocent and Malignantin 1922. The etiology remained unclear until the 1940s, and several agents were tried for the treatment on an empirical basis. See cancer therapy, carcinoma, carcinogenesiss.
