Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac Surgery The first series of cardiac operations to be performed were for stab wounds of the heart. Henry C. Dalton (b 1847) of Washington University sutured the torn pericardium from a stab wound in 1891 and Daniel Hale Williams (1858–1931) performed a similar operation at the Provident Hospital in Chicagoís South Side in 1893. The first recorded successful cardiac surgery was performed on a 22-year-old man with a stab wound through the heart by Ludwig Rehn (1849–1930) of Frankfurt in 1896. The first successful surgical operation for cardiac aneurysm was performed by a German surgeon, Ferdinand Sauerbruch (1875ñ1951) in 1903. This was followed by a valvotomy for stenosis of the pulmonary valve by a Paris surgeon, Eugene Louis Doyen (1859–1916) in 1913, but his procedure was unsuccessful. Elliot Carr Cutler ( b 1888) of the Western Reserve University of Cleveland, Ohio performed valvotomy for severe mitral stenosis through the transventricular approach in 1923. London surgeon, Sir Henry Sessions Souttar (b 1875) pioneered a valvulotomy procedure by introducing his fingers through the left atrium and splitting the mitral commisures in a case of mitral stenosis in 1925. An operation for an intracardiac congenital anomaly was carried out by Alfred Blalock (1899ñ1964) in 1944. Successful open heart surgery was performed (1953) by an American cardiovascular surgeon, John Heysham Gibbon (1903ñ1973) who used the heart–lung bypass machine on animals in 1939, and employed the first pump oxygenator on humans in 1954. He used his machine successfully to close an atrial septal defect in a 19-year-old woman in 1953. This was followed by a series of operations by Clarence Walton Lillehei (b 1918) who used human volunteers for cross circulation during his cardiac procedures. A modified heart–lung machine was introduced by J.W. Kirklin at the Mayo Clinic, and a successful operation for truncus arteriosus was performed by D.C. McGoon and G.C. Rastelli in 1967. Modern cardiac surgery in the 20th century was pioneered by Denton Arthur Cooley (b 1920) of Houston; he excised a ventricular cardiac aneurysm under cardiopulmonary bypass in 1959.
