Cell Culture, Cell Physiology

Cell [Latin: cella orcelo, to conceal] Robert Hook (1635–1703) adopted the term in biology to refer to the compartments that he noted in cork under the microscope in 1665. The structure of plants was observed two decades later by Marcello Malpighi (1628–1694) and Nehemiah Grew (1641–1712). The nucleus was described by Robert Brown (1773–1858) in 1831, and the nucleolus by Gabriel Gustav Valentine (1810–1883) in 1836. The role of the nucleus in cell division and the formation of tissues was studied by a German botanist, Matthias Jacob Schleiden (1804-1881) in 1838. His Grundzuge der Wissenschaftlichen Botanik published in 1842 was one of the first books on plant cytology. The structure of specialized cells, such as nerve cells and smooth muscle cells, was examined by Theodor Schwann (1821-1902) in 1839. He coined the famous phrase Omnis cellula e cellula (every cell from a cell). Analysis of diseased tissue on the basis of cell formation and structure was done by Rudolph Virchow (1821–1902) in his Cellular Pathology, published in 1858. The first electron-microscopic study, showing structures such as the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, was performed by an American cytologist of Belgian origin, Albert Claude (1899-1983), in 1945.
