Chemical Pathology

Chemical Pathology The first chemical investigation of blood was done by French physician and chemist, Hilaire Marin Rouelle (1718-1779), who found sodium carbonate, potassium chloride and sodium chloride in vertebrate blood in 1773. He also isolated urea from urine and demonstrate its high nitrogen content. Chemical pathology was established as a branch of medicine by Swedish professor of biochemistry at Harvard University, Otto Knut Olof Folin(1867-1934) with his microchemical method of estimation of blood glucose and other blood constituents, around 1915. His colorimetric method was later developed to measure microquantities of constituents such as urea nitrogen and uric acid in the blood around 1919. The method of radioimmunoassay for measuring minute amounts of biologically active substances such as hormones and enzymes in the blood was introduced by Solomon A. Berson (1918–1972), Rosalyn Sussman Yalow (b 1921) a New York physiologist and colleagues in 1956. See chromatography, diagnostic enzymology.
