Embryology, Evolution

Evolution [Latin: evolvere, to unroll] The concept that plants evolved before animals, and imperfect forms were gradually replaced by perfect forms was proposed by Empedocles of Agrigentum around 450 BC.The Roman poet, Lucretius(98–55 BC) in his grand poem De Rerum Natura, written around 80 BC, reflected the principle of the survival of the fittest in life. Count Buffon, also known as George Louis Leclerc (1707–1788), proposed the idea of evolution by pointing out that life forms in the animal kingdom were successively derived from one another. He also suggested that the earliest life forms originated from the polar regions and the ocean. Pioneers of modern evolution theory were Herbert Spencer (1820–1903), Alfred Russell Wallace (1823–1913) and Charles Darwin (1809–1882). The phrase ‘survival of the fittest’ and the word ‘evolution’ were coined by Spencer. Both Wallace and Darwin drew their inspiration from the work of an English clergyman Thomas Robert Malthus (1766–1834) who wrote An Essay on the Principle of Population or A View of its Past and Present Effects in 1803. Malthus argued that the only limits to expansion of a population were space and food, implying the survival of the fittest. Although Darwin commenced his work in 1838, Wallace independently came to the same conclusion one year before Darwin published his work. Spencer proposed the concept of evolution in his article The Development Hypothesis, which appeared in the Leader in 1852. He suggested the possibility of transmutation of species. On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection was published by Darwin in 1859, after 20 years of work.
