Endocrinology

Endocrinology [Greek: endo, within + krineien, to separate + logos, discourse] A pioneer was Swiss anatomist, Johann Conrad Brunner (1653–1727). He produced the symptoms of thirst and polyuria indicative of diabetes in dogs by surgical excision of their pancreas and published Glandula Pituitaria in 1688. His Glandula Duodeni seu pancreas Secundum detectum  was published in 1715. The concept of internal or endocrine secretion, in which an organ or tissue discharges its secretion directly into the bloodstream to influence other parts of the body, was proposed by Théophile de Bordeu (1722–1776) of Paris in 1775. Scientific evidence of a humoral substance that produced an effect on a site or organ remote from its origin was presented by Arnold Adolph Berthhold (1803–1861) of Göttingen in 1849. He transplanted the testis to a rooster which previously had its testis removed and showed normal resumption of male sexual characteristics.George Oliver (1841–1915) and Edward Sharpey-Schafer (1850–1935) in England in 1895 demonstrated that extracts of the suprarenal gland, when injected intravenously, produced a contraction of the arteries and acceleration of the heart rate, thereby increasing blood pressure. The active substance in their extract was named ‘adrenaline’ in England. John Jacob Abel(1857–1938) of Johns Hopkins Medical School independently isolated the same active substance in 1899 and called it ‘epinephrine’. William M. Bayliss (1860–1924) and Ernest Henry Starling (1866–1927) in 1902 obtained a substance from the intestinal mucous membrane which had a remote action on the pancreas. They named it ‘secretin’, and coined the term ‘hormone’ to denote similar substances. Fuller Albright (1900–1969), known as the father of endocrinology in America, did most of his work on the subject at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the early 1900s. His main interests were bone diseases and the parathyroid gland and he described vitamin D-resistant rickets, osteomalacia of steatorrhea, idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, bone changes in kidney disease and other important endocrinological entities. Endocrinology in America received a definite footing with the formation of the Association for the Study of Internal Secretions in 1917, and its official publication Endocrinologyappeared in the same year. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology was founded in America in 1941, and was renamed The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1952. In England the Journal of Endocrinology was founded in 1938 and the Society for Endocrinology was formed in 1946. See ductless glands, internal secretions, hormones.
