Epidemiology

Epidemiology [Greek: epi, upon + demos, people + logos, treatise] The first scientific explanation and description of how a disease spreads from person to person, and from place to place, was given by a Danish physician, Peter Ludwig Panum (1820–1885). His report, submitted to the Danish government in 1847 on the epidemic of measles in the Faeroe Islands, is considered a classic. The first scientific work in England was done by John Snow (1813–1858), an anesthetist and epidemiologist. He started his medical studies in Newcastle Infirmary, where he developed his interest in the epidemiology of cholera. He moved to London in 1836 and graduated in medicine in 1844. During the cholera outbreaks of 1848 and 1854 in London, he carried out epidemiological investigations and traced the source of one of the outbreaks to a sewage-contaminated well in Soho. His pioneering work led to identification of other sources of cholera and helped to abort several epidemics. A historic view, Epidemics and crowd diseases; an introduction to the history of epidemiology, was published in 1935 by Major Greenwood (1880–1949), professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
