Forensic Medicine, Toxicology

Forensic Medicine [Latin: forensis, pertaining to the forum] Medical jurisprudence is a relatively new specialty, originating in 1507 when the Bishop of Bamberg introduced a penal code requiring production of medical evidence in certain cases. In 1532 Charles V introduced a code for magistrates to call for medical evidence in cases of assault, infanticide, pretended pregnancy, simulated diseases and poisoning. The first work on forensic medicine, Constituto Criminalis Cardina, was published in 1553 in Germany. The first judicial postmortem was held by the French surgeon, Ambroise Paré around 1565. Another pioneer of medical jurisprudence in France was Antoine Louis (1723–1792). Alfred Swaine Taylor (1806–1880) an English forensic scientist, who occupied the first chair of medical jurisprudence at Guy’s Hospital in 1831 and wrote Elements of Medical Jurisprudence in 1836. Other English classics include: Principles of Forensic Medicine (1844) by William Augustus Guy (1810–1885);Medical Jurisprudence for India by Chever (1856); Ogston’s Lectures on Medical Jurisprudence (1878); and Dixon Mann’s Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (1893). Other famous British medical forensic scientists includeRobert Christison (1797–1882), Harvey Littlejohn (d 1927) and Sir Alfred Sidney Smith (1883–1969). A pioneer in France was Paul Camile Hippolyte Brouardel (1837–1906), who wrote several treatises.
