Genetics and Heredity
Genetics [Greek: genos, origin or descent] Term coined by William Bateson (1861–1926) in 1906. The science of genetics was founded by Gregor Mendel (1822–1884), an Augustinian monk who worked on hybridization of pea plants from 1856, publishing his epoch-making work in 1865. This went unheeded until Bateson published Mendel’s Principles of Heredityin 1902. The fact that the number of chromosomes was constant for each cell in a given body, and also probably characteristic of each species, was pointed out by a Belgian cytologist, Edouard van Beneden (1845–1910) in 1887. Sex-linked inheritance was shown by a geneticist from Kentucky, Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866–1945), during his work on Drosophilain 1910. The first chair of genetics was created at Cambridge in 1912 by an anonymous donor in the memory of the British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905, Arthur James Balfour (1848–1930)  and his brother Maitland Balfour (1851–1882),who was an embryologist. Reginald Crundall Punnett (1875–1967) of Tonbridge, a contemporary of Bateson, was appointed as its first professor. He published Mendelism in 1905.
