Genitourinary Medicine

Genitourinary Medicine An early authority was Persian physician, Rhazes (850–932) who considered that hematuria was a symptom of bladder disease, and wrote at length on urethral stricture. He devised catheters with lateral holes for draining pus and used a catheter of lead instead of bronze whenever flexibility was needed. The founder of modern genitourinary surgery was a professor in Paris, Felix Guyon (1831–1920), who published his lectures in 1881 and a treatise on the surgical diseases of the bladder and prostate in 1888. His contribution was followed by a classic work by Joaquin Dominguez Albarran (1860–1912) from Cuba, a professor in Paris. Venereal diseases, particularly syphilis, were common in the 19th century and Sir James Paget (1814–1889) in 1879 noted that 48% of the total outpatient attendance in his hospital was due to syphilis. The term ‘genitourinary medicine’ was promoted by Sir William Osler (1849–1919) during his evidence to the Royal Commission on Venereal Diseases in 1914, and the practice of venereology as a specialty started after the report by the commission in 1916. The Medical Society for Venereal Diseases in London was established in 1922 and the British Journal of Venereal Diseases, which became Genitourinary Medicine in 1985. The field became firmly established in England around 1970. The first professorial chair was established at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1978, with M.W. Adler as professor.
