On September 1, 1920, on behalf of the French Government General Gouraud proclaimed the establishment of State of Greater Lebanon (Arabic: ‎ Dawlat Lubnn al-Kabr; French: État du Grand Liban) with its present boundaries after splitting few Syrian villages on the southern and western borders with Lebanon and adding them to Lebanon and with Beirut as its capital.
