Neurosurgery

NEUROSURGERY Trepanning is the oldest form of neurosurgery and has been practiced since the Neolithic period. Studies by Pierre Paul Broca (1824–1880) in 1876 showed evidence of healing in such skulls which indicate, not only that the procedure must have been performed while they were alive, but also that they survived the procedure. Skulls from the pre-Incan period with trephine holes were identified by Muniz in 1894. The practice of trepanning amongst some races from Melanesia and Algeria in the 19th century have shown that it was used to cure conditions such as epilepsy, head injury, and demonic possession. The first modern scientific work on neuroanatomy was written by Félix Vicq d’Azyr (1748–1794) of Paris in 1786. Surgical treatment of a cerebral abscess by opening the lateral ventricles was performed by William Detmold (1808–1894) of America in 1850. Surgical removal of a brain tumor arising from the duramater was performed by Sir William Macewen (1848–1924), professor of surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1879. Sir Victor Horsley (1857–1916), founder of neurosurgery in England, removed a tumor of the spinal cord in 1888. Neurosurgery in Europe was advanced by Fedor Krause (1856–1937) of Berlin. Williams Harvey Cushing (1869–1939) was a pioneer of brain surgery in America who devised his own technique for removing intracranial tumors in 1932. A History of Neurological Surgery edited by an American neurosurgeon. A.E. Walker (b 1907) of Johns Hopkins was published in 1951.
