Obstetrics, Antenatal Care,
OBSTETRICS [Latin: obstetrix, a midwife] Obstetrics was practiced during ancient Greek times by female midwives. Physicians such as Galen (AD 129–200), Rufus of Ephesus (AD 110–180), Soranus of Ephesus (AD 98–138), Aretaeus the Cappadocian (AD 81–138) were familiar with the problems related to pregnancy, and puerperal fever is mentioned in the aphorisms of Hippocrates(460–375 BC). François Mauriceau(1637–1709), an eminent French obstetrician, dispensed with the obstetrical chair and delivered his patients in bed. His Des Maladies des Femmes Grosses et Accouchees was translated into English by Hugh Chamberlen, whose son Peter Chamberlen (1630–1720) was the inventor of obstetric forceps in 1693. Geronimo Scipione Mercurio (1550–1616), professor of medicine at Bologna and Pisa, wrote a book on obstetrics in 1586 in which he advocated cesarean section in cases of contracted pelvis. The contagious nature of puerperal fever was noted in 1795 by Alexander Gordon(1750–1799), an obstetrician from Aberdeen. He advocated disinfection of the clothes of the midwife and doctor before they attended the mother. An illustrative book, The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus was written in 1774 by William Hunter (1718–1783), accoucheur to the Queen. The combined method of internal and external podalic version was described in 1860 by John Braxton Hicks (1823–1897) of Rye in Sussex, an obstetric physician at Guy s Hospital. Chloroform was used successfully in 1847 by Sir James Young Simpson(1811–1870), a Scottish obstetrician. John Snow (1813–1858), the first physician to specialize in anesthesia, popularized the use of chloroform in obstetrics by administering it to Queen Victoria. The first incision of a rigid perineum which was likely to tear during delivery (episiotomy) was performed by Dublin man-midwife, Fielding Ould (1710–1789), and the procedure was introduced into America by Valentine Taliaferro (1831–1888) in 1851. Elizabeth Blackwell (1821–1910) was the first woman to be licensed to practice medicine in an English-speaking country (America). Operative delivery in obstetrics using a spinal block was performed by A. Kreis in 1900, and Achile Mario Dogliotti (1897–1966) introduced epidural anesthesia in 1931. The application of ultrasound was first done by Ian Donald (1910–1987), professor of obstetrics at Glasgow University in 1979. One of the most comprehensive historic accounts on the subject is given in the Eternal Eve published by Harvey Graham in 1950
