Occupational Disease

OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES Georgius Agricola (1494–1555), a physician in the mining town of Joachimsthal in Bohemia established the scientific study of occupational diseases in the mid-16th century. The first monograph on mine and smelter workers was written by Paracelsus (1493–1541) and published posthumously as Von der Bergsucht und anderen Bergkrankheiten in 1567. De Morbis Artificum Diatriba was written by Italian, Bernardini Ramazzini (1633–1714) from the University of Padua in 1690. Scrotal cancer in chimney sweeps was described by Sir Percivall Pott (1714–1788) in 1770. The same cancer from chronic contact with tar and mineral oil was observed by S.R. Wilson of Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1892. The first book in England was written in 1832 by Charles Turner Thackrah (1795–1833), a pioneer of industrial medicine in England and founder of the Leeds Medical School. Thomas M. Legge (1863–1932) was the first medical inspector of factories in England in 1898, and was responsible for the decline in lead poisoning in industry. Compulsory notification of industrial poisoning and diseases was introduced by the Home Office in England in 1901. See  cane cutter’s disease, chimney sweeps, coal miners disease, silicosis, pneumoconiosis, scrotal cancer, radiation injury, glass blower’s cataract, vibration injury, farmer’s lung.
