Ophthalmology, Eye,

OPHTHALMOLOGY [Greek: ophthalmos, eye + logos, discourse] Practiced as a separate branch of medicine in ancient Egypt. Philoxenus, who lived around 270 BC, was one of the most celebrated Alexandrian oculists. Aetius of Amida(AD 527–565) wrote an extensive treatise on diseases of the eye in the 6th century. Jesu Haly or Isa Ibn Haly(AD 850) was an Arabian oculist at Baghdad who wrote Liber memorialis ophthalmicorum in three parts. The first contained anatomy and physiology, and  parts two and three dealt with external diseases. Demosthenes Philalethes from Marseilles wrote a standard work on the subject that remained extant until AD 1000. The earliest printed book, De Oculis eorumeque egritudinibus et curis (1474), was written by Benvenuto Grassi of Salerno. George Bartisch (1535–1606), founder of modern ophthalmic surgery, wrote an illustrated book on eye surgery, Ophthalmodouleeia, in 1583. The first English monograph, A briefe treatise touching the preservation of the eie sight, was published by Walter Bayley (1529–1592) in 1586. Antonio Scarpa (1747–1832), father of Italian ophthalmology, published an important book in 1801. Another English book, A Synopsis of the Diseases of the Eye, was published by Benjamin Travers (1783–1858), a surgeon at St Thomas’  Hospital in 1820. The earliest treatise in America was written by George Frick (1793–1873) of Maryland, and the study of the eye was established as a specialty in America by Elkanah Williams (1822–1888) of Cincinnati. Albrecht Graefe (1828–1870) of Berlin was one of the greatest surgeons, founded the Archive for Ophthalmologie in 1854, introduced iridectomy as treatment for glaucoma and iritis, and cataract operation in 1855. He operated for strabismus in 1857 and introduced the linear method of cataract extraction in 1868.
