Orthopedics, Orthopaedics,

ORTHOPEDICS [Greek: orthos, straight + pais, child] The Edwin Smith papyrus (1500 BC) describes splints used by the Egyptians. Hindu Brahmin surgeons treated fractures with great skill. Paul of Aegina (625–690) defined a fracture as  ‘a division of the bone, or a rupture, or excision of it, produced by external violence’. Hippocrates (460–377) has dealt with fractures and dislocations in de Fracturis . He discussed the anatomy of the bones and joints, physiology of movements, classification of fractures, methods of reducing fractures, immobilizing limbs and various other orthopedic topics. Galen (129–200) used the term  ‘abruptio’ (to take away) to denote fracture of long end of a bone. The first orthopedic hospital was founded in 1790 at Orbe, Switzerland, by Jean-André Venel (1740–1791). Samuel Cooper(1780–1848) in his Dictionary of Practical Surgery published in 1809, devoted over 50 pages to fractures. The term was coined by French surgeon, Nicholas Andry (1658–1747) of Lyons in 1741. Pott fracture and spinal caries were described by Sir Percivall Pott (1714–1788) in 1779. The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital was founded by William John Little (1810–1894) in 1839. The first book in America was published bySamuel David Gross (1805–1884) in 1830, and one of the first surgeons to specialize was John Ball Brown (1784–1862) of Boston. Lectures on Orthopedic Surgery was published by Louis Bauer (1814–1898) of America in 1862. Hugh Owen Thomas(1834–1891) of Liverpool was the father of modern orthopedics in England. He came from a family of bone setters and devised various apparatus for treatment of deformities and fractures, including the Thomas  splint for compound fractures of the femur. Jacques Mathieu Delpech (1777–1832), professor of surgery at Montpellier, pioneered orthopedic surgery in France and devised a new method of treatment of club foot by subcutaneous section of the achilles tendon, and pointed out the tubercular nature of spinal caries. Gurdon Buck (1807–1877), a leading surgeon from New York, established treatment for fractures of the thigh by applying traction through weights and pulleys in the mid-19th century. In England it was recognized as a specialty in 1898, with the establishment of the British Orthopaedic Society. A pioneer in radiology was Etienne Destot (1864–1918) of Lyon who used it for diagnosis of bone disease two months after Wilhelm Konrad von Röntgen (1845–1923) discovered X-rays in February 1896. Joseph Lister’s (1827–1912) aseptic technique was introduced into orthopedic surgery in America by Lewis Atterbury Stimson (1844–1917) of New Jersey who wrote a treatise on fractures in 1883. The Orthopedic Association in America was formed in 1887, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons was founded in 1933. The British Orthopaedic Association was established in 1933.
