Pathology
PATHOLOGY [Greek: pathos,  suffering + logos,  discourse] The four cardinal signs of inflammation,  heat, pain, redness, and swelling were described by Aulus Cornelius Celsus (25 BC–50 AD), a Roman physician. Galen(AD 129–200) devoted six of his books to pathology. Antonio Benivieni (1443–1502), an Italian surgeon from Florence, was one of the first to do autopsies, which earned him the title of the founder of pathological anatomy. The term was introduced in a modern sense by Jean Francois Jean François Fernel (1497–1558), physician to Henry II of France in 1554. The first illustrated book of surgical pathology was published by Marcus Aurelius Severinus(1580–1656) in 1632. One of the greatest pathologists was professor of anatomy at Padua, Giovanni Battista Morgagni(1682–1771). He gave the first descriptions of calcification of coronary arteries, coarctation, endocarditis and carcinoma of the lung. He also correlated clinical findings with autopsy results. An epoch-making study on inflammation, fundamental to pathology, was done by British surgeon John Hunter (1728–1793), and his book A Treatise on blood, inflammation and gun-shot wounds was published in 1794. The first American treatise was published by William Edmonds Horner(1793–1853) in 1829. Cellular pathology was inaugurated by Rudolph Virchow (1821–1902), professor of pathology at Berlin. The role of leukocytes in inflammation was studied and explained by William Addison (1802–1881) in 1843. His work on the subject was advanced by German pathologist Julius Friedrich Cohnheim (1839–1884) in 1873, and French zoologist and Nobel Prize winner Elie Metchnikoff(1845–1916) in 1892.
