Pediatrics, Paediatrics
PEDIATRICS [Greek: pais, child] Diseases of children have been a specialty since ancient times. The Therapeutic Papyrus of Thebes (1552 BC), which is 65 feet long, has over 100 pages of hieractic script and a chapter devoted to diseases of children. An early treatise is attributed to the Roman physician, Galen (AD 129–200). However this short manuscript Liber de Passionibus puero um Galen  was probably written in the 6th century. The first modern treatise was written by Arabian physician Rhazes (850–932). The first printed book, Libellus de aegritudinibus infantum (Little Book of the Diseases of Children), based on the works of Avicenna (980–1037) and Rhazes was written by Paulus Begellardus or Bagellaro of Italy in 1472. The first book in England, Boke of Children, was written by English physician Thomas Phayer (1510–1560) in 1545; another,Help for the Poor, was published nearly 100 years later by Robert Pemel (d 1653), a physician from Cranbrook, Kent in 1653; a systematic treatise was written by Nils Rosen von Rosentein (1706–1773) in 1752; and a treatise on care and feeding was published by William Cadogan (1711–1797) in 1748. Modern pediatrics in England was established by Michael Underwood (1737–1820) who in 1793 described a form of childhood paralysis following a brief illness (probably the first scientific account of poliomyelitis), and his book A Treatise on the Diseases of Children remained a standard work for 50 years. The French established the Hospital des Enfants Malades in 1802. French leaders in pediatrics were A.C.E. Barthez(1811–1891) and F. Filliet(1814–1861) and Henri Roger(1809–1891) gave the first lectures. The first American textbook, A Treatise on Physical and Medical Treatment of Children, was written by William Potts Dewees (1768–1848) of Philadelphia in 1825. The first American children’s hospital was opened in Philadelphia in 1855, and a pediatric clinic was established at New York by Abraham Jacobi (1830–1919) in 1862. J.L. Smith (1827–1897) of Stafford, New York wrote Treatise on the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood. An early American journal, Archives of Pediatrics, was founded in 1884, and the first meeting of the American Pediatric Society was held in 1889. Thomas Coram, a philanthropist from Lyme Regis in Dorset, established the first Foundling Hospital in England in 1739. George Armstrong (1720–1789) opened a dispensary for the poor in London in 1769 where he treated thousands of poor children at his own expense. This led to similar clinics being set up in other parts of Europe. Armstrong also published An Essay on the diseases most fatal to Infants in 1767. The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children was founded in 1852 at the former premises ofSir Richard Mead (1673–1754), by a London physician, Charles West(1816–1898). The first person to devote time to mentally deficient children wasEdouard Séguin (1812–1880) of the Bicêtre Hospital in Paris, who wrote Traitment Moral, Hygiene et Education des Idiots et des Autre Enfants Arriers in 1846. Guido Fanconi (1892–1979), Swiss pediatrician at the University of Zurich, described renal tubular dysfunction (Fanconi syndrome) leading to aminoaciduria and cystic fibrosis of the pancreas. Samuel Jones Gee (1839–1911), a physician at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, described celiac disease in children in 1888. Edouard Heinrich Henoch (1820–1910), a pupil of Johannes Schönlein (1793–1864) and a pioneer in Germany, described Henoch–Schönlein purpura in 1837. George Frederic Still(1868–1898) of Great Ormond Street Hospital was a founder of pediatrics in England and in 1896 wrote On a form of chronic joint disease in Children while a registrar. The concept of inborn errors of metabolism was proposed in 1902 by Archibald Baring Garrod (1819–1909), of St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children.
