Plastic Surgery
PLASTIC SURGERY [Greek: plastikos,  to shape] One of the earliest applications was to the nose and face. The work of Aulus Cornelius Celsus (25 BC–50 AD) includes a description of plastic surgery to the face and skin grafting. The art of rhinoplasty was known to the ancient Hindus. Gaspare Tagliacozzi (1546–1599) of Bologna pioneered rhinoplasty in Europe, but his work was opposed by Ambroise Paré (1510– 1590) and Gabriele Falloppio (1523–1562)  on religious grounds. Carl von Graefe (1828–1870) of Berlin was the founder, with his work on rhinoplasty, blapharoplasty and repair of cleft palate. Frank Hastings Hamilton (1813–1886) treated ulcers by skin grafting in 1854. Transplantation of free skin instead of pedunculated flaps was introduced by Swiss surgeon, Jacques Louis Reverdin (1842–1929) in 1869. Contracture following burns was treated with skin grafts by George David Pollock (1817–1897) in 1871. Sir William Macewen (1848–1924), professor of surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary whose main interest was study of bones, initiated bone grafts. Skin grafts of intermediate thickness was performed by Louis Xavier Eduard Leopold Ollier (1830–1900) of Paris in 1872, and full thickness skin grafts were advocated by Fedor Victor Krause (1857–1937) in 1893. US army surgeon, Fred Houdlett Albee (1876–1945), employed living bone tissue grafts for internal splints and transplanted the tibia into a diseased spine of patients with Pott Disease in 1915. Vitray Papin Blair (1871–1955) and James Barrett Brown (1899–1971) introduced split skin grafts in 1929. Bone grafts were also used for non-union of a fractured femur neck by Melvin Anderson and co-workers at the Mayo Clinic in 1940s.
