Respiratory Medicine
RESPIRATION [Latin: respiratio, breathe] Orthopnoea as a symptom of cardiorespiratory disease was described by Paul of Aegina (625–690) as ‘to pant for breath and from their being obliged to keep the chest erect for fear of being suffocated, they are called orthopnoeic’. Scientific work on respiratory physiology was done by London physician, John Mayow (1640–1679) who wrote On Respiration and On the Respiration of the Foetus in 1674. In 1774 Joseph Priestley(1733–1804), a chemist in England demonstrated that blood became bright red when exposed to oxygen and it turned darker with carbon dioxide. French chemistAntoine Laurent Lavoisier(1743–1794) discovered that it required oxygen in 1775, stating that ‘Respiration is therefore a combustion, slow it is true, but otherwise perfectly similar to that of charcoal’. Julien Jean Cesar Legallois (1775–1814), a physician and physiologist from Cherneix, Brittany, discovered the respiratory center in the medulla oblongata in 1812, and Pierre Jean Marie Flourens(1794–1867) identified the bilateral ‘vital nodes’ of this in 1837. The Hering-Breuer reflex, a neurogenic reflex arising in the lung and controlling the rate and depth of respiration via the vagus nerve, was described by Josef Breuer (1842–1925) and Karl E.K. Hering (1834–1918) in 1868. The part played by the diaphragm was studied by Ludwig Traube (1818–1876) andLe Gros Clark in 1871,  and George Minott Garland (1849-1926) of New York in 1878. Other respiratory physiologists include: John Scott Haldane (1860–1936) who investigated the toxic effects of carbon monoxide; John Gillies Priestley (1879–1941) a respiratory physiologist who worked with John Scott Haldane (1860–1936) ; John Hutchinson (1811–1861) who invented the spirometer; Leonard Erskin Hill (1866–1952) who worked on respiratory physiology of caisson disease in 1915; and Sir Joseph Barcroft (1872–1947), professor of physiology at Cambridge who devised an apparatus for blood gas analysis. In cellular respiration, the hydrogen acceptor cytochrome was discovered by MacMunn in 1886. Glutathione, a hydrogen carrier in cellular respiration, was isolated by Nobel Prize winner, Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861–1947) of Cambridge University in 1921.
