Virology
Virology, Infectious Disease, Filterable Virus Minute particles in stained smears of vaccinal lesions were observed by a Scottish pathologist, John Brown Buist (1846–1915) in 1886. The first evidence for the existence of particles smaller than bacteria, capable of producing disease, was presented by Russian botanist, Dmitri Iosifovich Ivanovski (1864–1920) in 1892. During his investigation of the mosaic disease of the tobacco plant, he discovered that the sap of the diseased plant was still capable of transmitting the disease despite its treatment through a bacterial filter. His findings were not taken seriously until Wilhelm Martinus Beijerinck (1851–1931) revived the interest in 1898. In Ueber ein Contagium Vivum Fluidum , he once again demonstrated the filterability of the agent of tobacco mosaic disease. In the same year, Friedrich August Johann Löffler (1852–1915) and Paul Frosch (1860–1928) demonstrated the filterability of the agent that produced foot-and-mouth disease. This was an important landmark in virology, as it was the first disease in animals shown to be caused by a filterable agent. In 1904 minute bodies from smears taken from fowl-pox lesions were seen by A. Borrel, who claimed these to be viruses. Similar particles were seen by Enrique Paschen (1860–1936) in 1906 and these were later confirmed to be viruses. The influenza of swine was shown to be due to a virus by American virologist, Richard Edwin Shope (1901–1966). A method of growing viruses on tissue culture was discovered by American physiologists, Thomas Huckle Weller (b.1915) and Frederick Chapman Robins (b 1916), who shared the Nobel Prize for their work in 1954. The protein and nucleic acid components of a virus were demonstrated by a German-born American biochemist, Heinz Frankel-Conrat in 1955.
